Fourways, Johannesburg – The dedicated efforts of the Fourways Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 1 Neighbourhood Watch have been highlighted as a significant factor in a recent downturn in local crime statistics. Residents and patrollers gathered at a recent CPF meeting to discuss the positive impact of their collaborative safety initiatives.
According to figures presented at the meeting, residential burglaries and vehicle hijackings within Sector 1, which encompasses areas like Lonehill and parts of Fourways, have seen a marginal but encouraging decrease over the past quarter compared to the previous year. Watch coordinator, Mrs. Sarah van der Merwe, emphasized the critical role of an engaged community. "Our patrollers are the eyes and ears on the ground, but it's the residents reporting suspicious activity promptly that truly makes the difference," she stated. "This synergy between active patrols and informed residents has created a deterrent effect that criminals are starting to notice."
The Neighbourhood Watch has implemented several strategies, including increased visibility patrols during peak crime hours, a streamlined communication system for reporting incidents, and community awareness campaigns focusing on home security best practices. Collaboration with the Douglasdale SAPS has also been instrumental, providing valuable intelligence and a quick response to reported incidents. The success story serves as a model for other burgeoning areas in northern Johannesburg facing similar urban safety challenges.
While acknowledging the positive trend, Mrs. van der Merwe urged residents not to become complacent. "Crime prevention is an ongoing effort. We must continue to be vigilant, report all suspicious activities, and support our local policing structures to ensure Fourways remains a safe environment for everyone," she added, highlighting the importance of sustained community involvement.
